CLIMB AGAINST THE ODDS
June 14 – 18, 2018
For anyone who knows me, the fact that I have volunteered to climb Mt. Shasta on behalf of Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, well what can I say? I know you are not surprised and you are probably smiling and saying to yourself, “here she goes again”!!! If you know me, you know that living within the norm is not for me but pushing myself outside my comfort zone truly is! And for all of you who don’t know me, you will, in the three minutes it will take you to read this!!!
Let’s start with the negatives – I have never climbed nor hiked. I have never slept outdoors or camped and I am definitely not 21!! So, who am I and why am I doing this?
Well, I am a woman who believes that the breast cancer fight can only be won by prevention. I am also a woman who truly believes that doing nothing is not an option. If we all do that little something, we can definitely make a difference.
Most important, I am also a mom – a mom who remembers that sunny day in September 2006. What a fun day it was too! It was freshman move in day at Boston College. How excited we were for our boys! We were a group of moms (and dads, can’t forget them) who were cleaning rooms, making beds and moving furniture. Mary Kay scrubbed every inch of that room and we laughed, knowing it would never look like that again! Here we were, brought together amongst chaos and so very proud! Our boys were to have an adventure that would carry them into manhood.
Fast forward to 2018 and two of the moms are no longer with us. They fought hard and long and both ladies lost their battle with breast cancer in the fall of 2016. So, to you Mary Kay Dionne and to you Mary Ellen Raccuia, I dedicate this climb to you. To you and to all the moms, sisters, daughters, aunts and their families who fought the battle and lost, I dedicate this climb. And to all those who fought and won and to those who are still fighting, I dedicate this climb to you as well. The climb is a challenge but I guess you know by now that it’s not about the climb.
And yes, Mary Kay and Mary Ellen, our wonderful, sweet boys are truly men to be proud of!
