We have all heard about the #MeToo movement, and sexual harassment continues to be a scourge of women in the workplace. But discrimination is often more subtle. Women are:
- denied promotions
- paid less doing the same jobs as their male colleagues
- stereotyped in ways that harm their careers.
And even decades after he Supreme Court recognized that if assertiveness is viewed as an asset for male employees, it must be similarly valued in female employees, “bossy” and “bitchy” continues to be used as a derogatory term to define successful women.
What can you do when you find yourself in one of these situations?
Federal, state, and, especially, local laws protect female employees from these kinds of discrimination. New York City has some of the strongest anti-discrimination laws in the country. And New York State has particularly plaintiff-friendly class action rules.
Our presenters, attorneys at Sanford Heisler Sharp have been at the forefront of enforcing these laws. Over the past year, Sanford Heisler Sharp attorneys have represented executives wrongfully terminated from their employment based on their gender, graduate students sexually harassed by their mentors, female law partners pursuing claims for unequal pay,and classes of women alleging discrimination against major companies like KPMG and Merck. They achieved tremendous successes for their clients, many of which will never be publicly known, because the cases resolved confidentially often through mediation.
